Further to a previous commission by Norwich City Council for the Wensum Park refurbishment project, Norwich, the City Council appointed Cannon Clarke Architects to commence a feasibility study for a neglected pavilion that is nestled into the landscape to the northeast of the park.

The Wensum Park refurbishment project in Norwich focuses on redesigning the original 1925 layout. The original design of the park provided a pavilion on 2 levels, the uppermost being an open-air terrace and principle entrance to the park at road level. and the lower, accessed by a pair of side stairs providing covered seating with an outlook to the Wensum River beyond.

Currently, the Grade II Listed neo-classically designed pavilion is no more than an opportunity for anti-social behaviour.

Our design response, developed in line with the client’s requirements, was to internalise and secure part of the lower tier. By repurposing this area as a communal café, we aimed to create a welcoming and functional space. This new café not only provides a positive and profitable use for the pavilion, but it also strengthens the connection to the park’s heritage. Additionally, it offers much-needed facilities for park visitors, enhancing their overall experience.

At Cannon Clarke Architects, we took great care to consider the user journey at every stage of the design process. Drawing on our extensive experience in leisure development, we focused on essential elements such as access, egress, seating, and security. By addressing these factors, we ensured that the space could be reused in a practical and viable way. Internally, the design features a cohesive ceramic tile treatment across the back and side walls, adding visual unity. We also incorporated vending counters for added functionality and large sliding glass screens to protect the space during inclement weather.

Externally, we took a fresh approach to the timber trellis on the terrace. Instead of retaining the old structure, we transformed it into a lightweight glazed canopy. This thoughtful redesign not only enhances the visual appeal but also provides sheltered outdoor seating for visitors, allowing them to enjoy the park in comfort.
