Cannon Clarke Architects produced an early-stage feasibility study for Cringleford Parish Council for an extension annex to the 1980’s-built Willow Community Centre.

The brief was to provide space for Parish Council meetings as well as a ‘venue for hire’ for the community.

The chosen site was an expanse of lawn to the side of the existing building close to the open street-side boundary.

Our concept ensured the multi-functional requirements of meeting room and flexible open space could be achieved by ensuring that sufficient storage space was available for furniture and that the building could appear to be both transparent and opaque depending on requirements.

The final designed form proposed full-height glazing to 3 sides, the fourth being the connection to the existing building. A slender roof edge was conceived to be supported on 4 exaggerated corner columns that in turn would store the window drapes in ‘transparent’ mode. The splaying of these corner columns was a device to maximise the views out (and more importantly in) to the community at large.
