This contemporary extension to the side and rear of a 1980s-built semi-detached dwelling has been designed to enlarge the living accommodation for a private client based in Ringland on the outskirts of Norwich, Norfolk.

Cannon Clarke Architects have taken an existing consented (smaller) scheme and made modifications to provide proposals for a highly bespoke residential extension to incorporate an enlarged kitchen/dining space and living/snug area.

Rusticated oak portals define openings and define views from kitchen to dining and from dining to garden.

The main feature of the dining space is a large glazed roof light set at the apex to the pitch of the roof. To the side of the dining space, a small level change down defines the living/snug area with a proposed window seat with views to the garden and strip roof light to capture afternoon/evening sunlight.

Between the dining and living spaces, although predominantly open in plan, a room divider in the form of a double-sided fireplace allows for flexibility of space and function changes between summer and winter so that the living and dining spaces can be swapped.

The external treatment of the rear extension is conceived as stained-treated wood cladding to complement the expression of the substantial oak framing to window and door openings. The roof is proposed in zinc for a contemporary hard-wearing finish.
