Residential Extension / Ash Grove, Norwich
The brief for this residential extension project in Norwich was to provide the client with a modern open-plan arrangement for kitchen, dining and living spaces. Our design replaces a tired-looking (and leaking) conservatory.
The design of the Ash Grove residential extension includes a minor refurbishment to the main body of the house. The plan creates a separate utility room and allows for a new kitchen layout that optimises functionality and flow.
The detached dwelling reflects the suburban character of Norwich. Situated on a narrow plot, it limits opportunities for new windows on the flanking walls. Consequently, the design focuses on maximising a single expansive view of the garden, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The roof features a diagrid structure made from plywood roof members, enhancing the interior environment and allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the layout. Additionally, the innovative design includes a chequerboard pattern of roof lights strategically placed within the coffers, ensuring abundant natural light fills the spaces below throughout the day.
The section across the new extension allows for an internal climbing wall (as part of the client’s brief) to the ‘high’ side. Meanwhile, the ‘low’ side ensures that the neighbour’s property is not overshadowed.
As the plan evolved, it featured a sequence of spaces that are loosely defined by fixed furniture and subtle changes in level. Moreover, the landscaping proposals play a crucial role in the overall design, conceived as the ‘fourth’ room. The zig-zag layout of planting beds draws inspiration from the roof grid and the canopy over the patio terrace. This creates a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior.
Norwich City Council has granted Planning Permission for the Ash Grove residential extension. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with our clients as we progress through to completion.
