Cannon Clarke Architects secured Listed Building Consent and Planning Permission for a single-storey extension to the rear of the Grade 2 Listed red and buff brick early 19th Century detached house.
Previous to the current owner’s occupation, the house had operated as a dentist’s surgery and had been extended in the 1990s with a small waiting room which the new proposal replaces.
To suit the client’s needs, the extension operates in an open-plan arrangement of kitchen, dining and living. The grade II listed building design incorporates large bifold doors opening out to an extensive rear garden framed by a brick portal of buff/grey brick to contrast and differentiate the extension from the existing building.
Brick slips bonded to the soffit of a Nexus lintel system and double brick reveal give the portal depth and articulation. Untreated Siberian Larch cladding battens sit between the glazing extents as a counterpoint to the brick treatment.
Internally the 3 functions within the open plan space are subtly defined in the ceiling by the use of down-stand rusticated oak flitch beams. Glazed Crittall screens divide the extension from the extents of the original house.
Cannon Clarke Architects worked with the client’s appointed landscape designer to ensure harmony between materials employed and create seamless sequences of spaces from inside to out.
