Cannon Clarke Architects were appointed by The Frankton Group to design a multi-purpose leisure facility as a conversion of a small industrial unit in the outskirts of Chelmsford, Essex.
The scope of the project was to provide conceptual design through to technical information in order for this commercial leisure development project to be completed within a 4-month period.
The programme of accommodation catered for 3 separate stakeholders to provide gym, spa and Brazilian Jui Jitsu training facilities with shared back-of-house provision, a common entrance lobby and juice bar, which Cannon Clarke Architects conceived as a double height space. The Jui Jitsu aspect, located on a proposed first floor, also required space for a small shop/cafe and spectator viewing of the dojo/sparring area.
Cannon Clarke Architects developed internal layouts with the client in the context of the limited space capacity of the existing shell in parallel with material design studies in the output of our in-house CGIs for marketing purposes at the same time as resolving technical design for a mezzanine deck system that was subject to early procurement.
Planning permission for this leisure development was not required however, Cannon Clarke Architects provided information for Building Control sign-off for Building Regulations and ultimately construction information.
