Cannon Clarke Architects have designed a residential extension to a 19th Century cottage in the small seaside village of Bacton in North Norfolk.

The client’s brief was to reorganise the ground floor to provide a larger open-plan kitchen dining space and an additional bedroom at first floor.

Our design links and inhabits an existing outbuilding and curved flint wall conservatory to provide the additional accommodation at ground floor and extends the footprint at the rear for the new bedroom suite.

A new curved staircase (in place of the tight existing stair) within a double-height space was proposed to link the floors and navigate many existing changes in level and low ceiling heights. A large circular roof light sits above the stair and provides natural daylight to both the stair and dining area below.

Externally the existing cottage is in the vernacular brick and flint tradition and our proposal distinguishes the new from the old with contrasting but complementary materials of timber larch cladding and zinc roofing.
