An existing 1970s suburban house in Cringleford, Norwich is to be dramatically transformed into a stylish, contemporary dwelling, via a carefully choreographed series of extensions and alterations.

Design studies took stylistic influence from ‘mid-century modern’ architectural examples. The proposal appears as a new, standalone dwelling, that is boldly different from neighbouring properties. However, it fits seamlessly within the street scene, which hosts a variety of house styles.

The building sits among beautifully manicured gardens that slope away from the rear of the property. Furthermore, the proposed balcony and terraces enhance the enjoyment of these stunning views while effectively protecting the private amenity of the neighbours. As a result, the design actively promotes a harmonious relationship between the property and its surroundings.

Energy efficiency drives the design, ensuring a significant thermal uplift of the existing building fabric. The project achieves this through careful planning and modern techniques. Passive ventilation systems and solar heating strategies shape the room layout and internal configuration, maximizing natural airflow and capturing solar energy efficiently. Additionally, the design incorporates a green roof, which enhances insulation and biodiversity. Also, a large photovoltaic (PV) array integrates into the design, contributing to renewable energy production.

This substantial extension and refurbishment project, located in Cringleford, Norwich, received planning permission from South Norfolk District Council in 2023. A strong design narrative emphasising sustainability and modern design principles greatly supported the success of the application. Furthermore, the proposal relied on a strategic response and detailed design statement that demonstrated how the project meets both aesthetic and environmental goals.

Construction work began in autumn 2023, marking a significant step forward for the project. The building process will progress steadily over the following months, and the team expects to complete the project by winter 2024.
