The design of a new contemporary single storey extension for open plan living to a Grade II Listed property

End Farm is a Grade II Listed detached dwelling located near the village of Fritton, Norwich.

Cannon Clarke Architects were appointed to design a new, contemporary single storey extension that would offer open plan kitchen/dining for modern living. Minor internal alterations to the existing Listed dwelling were proposed to create an additional ground floor guest bedroom and boot room. The existing ‘clay lump’ outbuilding is to be refurbished and repurposed into a new home office.

The proposed extension, linking the existing dwelling and outbuilding together maximizes southern views out to the garden. The proposed form and material palette draws parallels from nearby agricultural barns, with black timber cladding and inverted ‘butterfly’ metal roofing proposed.

It was appropriate that the design response was high-quality in terms of aesthetics, scale and material palette in order for it to remain sub-servient to the host building and setting.
