Net Zero Carbon – Designing With Sustainability in Mind

Driving Sustainability Forward: Heigham Park Public Toilets
At Cannon Clarke Architects, sustainability is central to our design approach. Heigham Park public toilets became a key case study for refining our in-house sustainability toolkit and strategies.
With a focus on efficiency and low operational energy, we carefully considered material choices and sustainability aspirations. As part of this, we conducted a retrospective whole-life carbon assessment, creating a Net Zero Carbon diagram to better understand the project’s environmental impact.
This assessment helped us visualise the carbon implications of using materials like lightweight steel frames and natural timber cladding. It also allowed us to compare alternative finishes, such as render or external brickwork, against the chosen timber cladding.
Our goal is to integrate this process into all future projects, ensuring that sustainability remains a core consideration at every stage of development. By producing clear, visual tools like the Net Zero Carbon diagram, we aim to make informed design decisions that contribute to a more sustainable future.
