Planning Approval for Contemporary Extension
Securing unanimous approval at yesterday’s Planning Committee Meeting was a significant milestone for Cannon Clarke Architects. This exciting project involves a transformative expansion of a 3-bedroom bungalow into a contemporary 5-bedroom, 2-storey detached home in the Brooke Conservation Area.
The original 1950s bungalow, tucked deeply within its garden plot, was ripe for modernisation. Our client’s vision was clear: retain as much of the existing structure as possible while completely reimagining its size and aesthetic.
Our creative solution included rear and side extensions and a vertical expansion to create ‘room-in-roof’ accommodation. Early discussions with the South Norfolk Planning Department highlighted the challenges, as we needed to work within constraints due to its conservation setting.
Staying true to our contemporary design philosophy, we proposed a bold, forward-facing gable-ended roof form and divided the roof into three segments to minimise visual mass and impact upon the neighbouring ‘Listed’ thatch cottage. We successfully worked with the planners to achieve the functional and aesthetic merits of our design and attained Officer support at committee.
The new frontage, crafted from Danish brick, elegantly frames the entrance and provides a semi-private balcony for the principal bedroom, seamlessly blending form and function.
This project showcases our commitment to innovative design and thoughtful integration within historical contexts. We will be excited to bring this vision to life as the project progresses. Below shows the “before” picture.
