Planning Laws – BNG, Nutrient Neutrality and Construction Waste

For our April East of England Sustainable Building Network (EESBN) event, we invited Callum Ross and James Dorrell from Mills & Reeve to discuss and share their knowledge on Construction Waste, Nutrient Neutrality, BNG and Planning Reforms, considering the legal issues and opportunities.
They looked at the proposed changes to the environmental aspects of planning laws, such as the establishment of Nature Restoration Funds and how these could impact the environment. Additionally they explored the topic of construction waste and the movement of materials, how to tackle challenges and opportunities in managing it, and discussed the legal and regulatory aspects of waste management and circular economy approaches and issues, including unauthorised movement of waste at non-permitted sites. They discussed Nutrient Neutrality and the major concern in Norfolk, especially in areas like The Broads and Wensum, sharing the issues with nutrient neutrality causing delays in housing delivery and affecting planning permission, the evolving mitigation strategies, and environment delivery plans.
Future Events
This event provides a platform for discussions, sharing knowledge, learning ways to increase sustainability in the built environment, and networking opportunities over breakfast and tea and coffee. The event aims to bring people together to collectively drive sustainability in construction, aligning with the UK’s goals for Net Zero Carbon by 2050.
We hope you can attend our next event, which is on 2 June 2025, where we will be welcoming Morgan Sindall as our guest speakers. Keep an eye out for updates on our East of England Sustainable Building Network LinkedIn page.
